Another great post by Joe Rubino, giving insight into the role of the taxi driver. Check it out!
How can a driver impact business?
So let’s look at the supply and demand concept in the area of taxicab coverage. What do I mean by “taxicab coverage”? In my opinion, the best way for a taxicab company to grow, and for its drivers to make more money, is by improving service while growing the company’s coverage area. It makes sense that, to make MORE money, a company has to stimulate MORE business. At the same time that it is soliciting MORE business, the company has to protect and nurture the business that it already has.
But the company cannot do this alone. The company needs the driver and the driver needs the company. While the company is growing the business, the driver must do his part. He must treat every trip seriously and respond to calls as quickly and safely as possible. After picking up the passenger, the driver must provide the delivery of that rider with a high degree of service and customer satisfaction. The driver must do his best to make sure the customer decides to call his company back the next time service is needed.
But the commitment to coverage by the driver does not stop there.
What else should the driver do?
The driver must also realize that to grow the business, he must 1) never reject a trip, and 2) be willing to sometimes make pickups in areas he has not worked before. The company often needs to expand their coverage area to grow the company. Drivers need to provide that coverage. Drivers often need to get a bit out of their comfort zone and start working as large a portion of the company’s service area as possible.
I often tell the story of how, in my early career as a taxicab driver, I made the decision to start covering trips in an area of the city where most of my fellow drivers refused to go. If you remember the story, then you might also recall that my earnings virtually doubled overnight. I was making so much money, that as a twenty six year old cab driver, I bought my first house, and it was a brand new home with a swimming pool in a beautiful neighborhood. All because I realized that more coverage by me meant more money in my pocket. You may need to change the way you approach driving a taxi because there is no growth without change. A driver cannot make more money without changing something that he is currently doing. This change might be different things for different drivers, but whatever way you look at it, it’s all about expanding your cab company’s supply in order to growth both your business and that of the company.
Picking up more trips, and covering a larger service area means growth, and growth means more money. You cannot make more money without changing, and without growing as a taxicab driver in some positive way.
